It helped me immensely in my 8 months in South and Central America. Looking back, I should have learned more Spanish before I started traveling. It just makes for a much easier and enjoyable experience when you can communicate with new found friends and strangers coherently. Traveling thru these regions has been some of the greatest experiences of my life, and I hope you get the chance to do so as well. I came up with the idea of using the internet to directly link students with native speaking teachers. Bypassing the expensive language schools, passing the savings onto you, while still being able to pay the teachers about 3 times what a regular Spanish school pays. Having spent a lot of time in some of the poorest regions in South/Central America, I decided to devote some of the profits from here to children's charities in Latin America.
